Nestled in the vibrant heart of Brisbane’s CBD, MidTown stands as a beacon of modern design, seamlessly merging two ex-government buildings into a singular A-Grade tower. Designed by the visionary team at Cox Architecture, this 20,000-square-metre workspace redefines the conventional office environment, offering a sustainable and adaptable model tailored for today’s dynamic workforce.
A Vision for Connection and Adaptability
MidTown embodies the principles of connection and evolution. The design brief called for a nimble environment that could evolve alongside the client’s business, fostering a deeper connection with the community. At the core of this vision are two striking design features: a central atrium bathed in natural light and lush greenery, and a vibrant high-street that promotes serendipitous interactions.
Brooke Lloyd, a Director at Cox, emphasizes the importance of place and human connection in an increasingly digital world. “The workplace is not just about functionality; it’s a magnet for innovation and collaboration,” she notes. This ethos is woven into the very fabric of the workplace, encouraging exploration and discovery at every turn.

Innovative Design Features
The central atrium serves as the heart of the building, anchored by an auditorium known as ‘The Pit.’ This dynamic space is designed for cultural exchange, allowing teams to gather and strengthen their vibrant corporate culture. Surrounding the atrium, the high-street acts as an activated thoroughfare, inviting spontaneous encounters and fostering a sense of community among occupants.
Cox Architecture’s approach to the workspace challenges the traditional office layout by integrating a high proportion of hackable, collaborative areas. Remarkably, 30% of the primary work points are moveable, granting teams the autonomy to customize their environments according to their needs. This flexibility is vital for a global organization like the client, which requires a responsive approach to technology and connectivity.
Sustainability at Its Core
The project is a testament to sustainability, utilising recycled materials from the original structures to significantly reduce carbon emissions, by an impressive 11,000 tonnes. This commitment to eco-friendly practices not only enhances the building’s environmental credentials but also enriches the overall user experience.
The project has garnered accolades, including an Award of Merit at the Design Australia Awards 2022 and a Highly Commended recognition at the World Architectural Festival INSIDE Awards 2022, further solidifying its status as a pioneering example of modern workplace design.
